You probably have some knowledge of the stock market and have probably considered investing in stocks before now. Aside from providing companies with capital to grow and contribute to the economy, stock market investments have historically been more consistent than other investment options. Stock prices and company performances depend on a combination of different factors so it’s important to know that the past performance of a company is no guarantee of how it will do in the future.

Gains from the stock market are tax free in Jamaica and it is quite a diverse investment making it ideal for the long term investor.

What is a Unit Trust?

A Unit Trust is an investment scheme in which the savings of many individuals are pooled together into what is termed a Fund.
Who are Trustees and what is their responsibility to unit holders?

The following entities will be eligible for appointment as trustees:

(1) A company licensed under the Financial Institutions Act;
(2) A company licensed under the Banking Act;
(3) A company licensed under the Building Society Act;
(4) A company licensed under the Securities Act as
(a) a Central Securities Depository
(b) a Securities Dealer or
(c) an Investment Advisor;
(5) A company which
(a) is able to satisfy the FSC’s criteria for Fit and Proper Status, and
(b) meets the stipulated capital requirement

Under the Unit Trust Act, a Unit Trust Fund must have a Trustee (an independent financial institution) which then acts as or appoints a custodian for all the investments of the Unit Trust Fund. These instruments are registered in the name of the Trustee and held for the sole benefit of Unit Holders. The trustee for the Sigma Fund is MF&G Trust & Finance Ltd.
Who are the Managers and what are their responsibility?

The unit trust manager has a fiduciary responsibility to manage the trusts assets in the best interest of the unit holders. Pan Caribbean Financial Services (PCFS) are the Managers of the Sigma Funds. The manager may delegate its responsibilities to any person approved by the trustee.
How do I exit or cash out of the Unit Trust?

You are required to return the certificate (if provided) and sign a transfer form to sell the units. If the certificate cannot be provided, then an indemnity form must be signed and witnessed by a Justice of the Peace before the transaction is processed.
At least one to three (1-3) working days are required to process the withdrawal request.
How will I be updated on the status of my investment?

You will receive a quarterly statement of your account via mail. Unit prices are also published online at www.gopancaribbean.com as well as weekly in the Business Observer and the Financial Gleaner.
Can I add a name(s) or delete a name(s) from my investments?

Yes, but the account must be closed and a new account opened.
Is income earned in the fund taxable?

Sigma Optima and Sigma Venture®, which is invested in equities, is TAX-FREE.
Sigma Solution®, Sigma Liberty®, and Sigma Corporate® which are invested in government securities, are tax-free if the principal (up to a maximum of $1M per annum) is held for five years. If the principal is withdrawn before five years, the gains will be taxed at 25%.
Can I use my investment in the Unit Trust as security or collateral?

Yes. All investments made in Sigma Solution® (J$1M minimum) can be used as collateral. To do so, your financial institution must submit a letter requesting the assignment of funds in their favour. If you have a joint account, all persons will have to sign giving permission for the assignment. A fee is charged for this service.
How soon after each investment can I encash my Units?

Encashment is permitted after the following holding periods.

SIGMA SOLUTION® - 60 Days
SIGMA OPTIMA® - 30 Days
SIGMA LIBERTY® - 60 Days
SIGMA VENTURE® – 365 Days
SIGMA CORPORATE® – 365 Days
Does PCFS charge investors any fees?
The current one-time preliminary charges are:
- Sigma Solution®/ Sigma Liberty® - Waived if units are purchased at any Pan Caribbean branch and held for a minimum of sixty days (60). Otherwise, 2% is charged.
- Sigma Optima® - Inclusive of a 4% charge and an additional 4% if units are encashed before the minimum holding period of 30 days.
- Sigma Corporate - Waived if units are purchased at any Pan Caribbean branch and held for a minimum of one year (365 days). Otherwise, 1% is charged.
- Sigma Venture - Inclusive of a 4% charge and an additional 4% if units are encashed before the minimum holding period of 365 days.
A management fee of 0.125% per month is also applicable to all portfolios.
Are the returns guaranteed?

No, the returns are not guaranteed. However, a review of our performance over the past 10 years shows a consistent level of return, which has outperformed most market indices making Sigma one of the top performing funds in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
